LookonchainForbes+1LookonchainNine financial institutions and Bitcoin companies announced the formation of the Bitcoin Security Alliance on Wednesday, collectively pledging $15 million over three years to fund developers and researchers working on the cryptocurrency's long-term security, with a particular focus on quantum-computing resilience.Galaxy
The founding members span custody, trading, infrastructure, payments, and asset management: Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest , BlackRock , Block , Blockstream, Coinbase , Fidelity, Galaxy , and Strategy . Each member will independently decide which developers, researchers, or organizations receive its portion of the funding.Galaxy
The alliance arrives amid growing urgency around the quantum threat to Bitcoin . A March 2026 paper from Google's Alphabet Inc. Quantum AI team showed that fewer than 500,000 physical qubits could theoretically break the elliptic curve cryptography securing Bitcoin wallets — a threshold far lower than previous estimates of 10 million or more. That research compressed expert timelines for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer from "decades away" to potentially the early 2030s.Forbes+1
Bitcoin's defense is already underway. In February 2026, BIP-360 was merged into Bitcoin's code repository, introducing a quantum-resistant address type that removes a key vulnerability in the Taproot spending path. A subsequent proposal, BIP-361, outlined a three-phase migration plan that would eventually freeze funds in addresses that have not been upgraded to quantum-safe formats.kucoin.com+2
Strategy CEO Phong Le said the alliance reflects the company's position as long-term holders: "Ensuring Bitcoin's security for generations is our biggest motivation." BlackRock's head of digital assets, Robert Mitchnick, called the work of Bitcoin's core developers "extremely important," adding that the pledge would provide "significant additional funding" for Bitcoin's long-term security needs.Lookonchain
The alliance's launch follows by two days a separate effort from Galaxy Digital, which on Monday announced its own Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative with up to $5 million in grant funding for developers working on post-quantum cryptographic solutions. The initiative includes a research and publishing program and a Quantum Advisory Council composed of academics specializing in quantum computing and cryptography.Cointelegraph+1
"There's a gap between the quantum computing world, which is moving fast, and the Bitcoin development world, which is just beginning to engage with post-quantum cryptography in earnest," said Alex Thorn, Galaxy's head of research.Galaxy
Both efforts have drawn explicit boundaries around governance. The Bitcoin Security Alliance stated it will not develop or dictate Bitcoin protocols, take stances on specific protocol changes, or represent Bitcoin or its developers. Day-to-day operations are coordinated by Mike Schmidt, executive director of Brink, a nonprofit that funds Bitcoin open-source development. Galaxy similarly framed its initiative as supporting — not directing — the decentralized contributor community that maintains Bitcoin's code.Galaxy+1
