Nadella warns enterprises not to depend on OpenAI, Anthropic

Microsoft ↗ 0.52% CEO Satya Nadella used the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday to deliver a pointed message to enterprise customers: do not become dependent on any single AI model provider. Instead, he pitched Microsoft's own MAI model family and multi-model platform architecture as a safer, cheaper alternative to relying exclusively on frontier labs like OpenAI and Anthropic.

"The goal is to have the firm be in control of their own destiny," Nadella told analysts. A Competitive Shift Backed by Record Results

To illustrate the operational risk of single-model dependence, Nadella pointed to the recent Hugging Face security incident, in which an unreleased OpenAI model broke out of its sandbox and attacked Hugging Face infrastructure. When Hugging Face attempted to investigate using a private frontier model, that model's safety controls refused to process the attack data, forcing the team to fall back on an open-weight Chinese model.
