Meta launches Muse Code AI agent to rival Anthropic and OpenAI

Meta Platforms ↗ 1.02% on Wednesday released Muse Code, its first AI coding agent, entering a competitive market dominated by Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex as the company attempts to establish itself as a force in developer tools.

A Terminal Agent Built for Complex Workflows

Muse Code is a terminal-based tool available in beta for macOS and Linux that can be installed with a single command. Powered by the new Muse Spark 1.2 model, it handles planning, code generation, and validation across large repositories. "You can install it with one command and then use it to take on complete software engineering tasks across a wide variety of use cases, planning changes, writing code, validating the results," said Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer who leads Meta Superintelligence Labs.cnbc

Meta says Muse Spark 1.2 was co-trained alongside Muse Code, resulting in better tool use, fewer retries, and higher-quality output than wrapping an external model. The model carries a one-million-token context window designed to let long-running tasks complete in a single session.unite

Aggressive Pricing and Internal Push

Meta is undercutting rivals on price. The standard tier runs $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens, while a contributor tier — which allows Meta to use prompts for model improvement — drops costs to $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.20 per million output tokens.unite

Internally, Meta is also deploying a coding agent called MetaCode, asking thousands of engineers to use it in their daily work to help close the gap with competitors, according to The Information. Catching Up in a Crowded Market

The release marks the culmination of a rapid product cadence since Wang joined Meta in June 2025 as part of a deal worth more than $14 billion. His team launched the original Muse Spark model in April, followed by Muse Spark 1.1 in July, and now the coding agent alongside Muse Spark 1.2.9to5mac+1

Unlike ChatGPT Codex and Claude Code, Muse Code does not yet have a dedicated app interface. The agent is available through the Meta Model API, now in public preview with expanded global access, and through OpenRouter for developers who want to integrate it into existing tools.unite+1
