axios.com.siliconangle.com.x.com+1.Meta has acquired Conductor, a startup whose app lets software engineers run several AI coding agents at the same time. Axios first reported the deal on Wednesday, November 4, citing people familiar with it. The companies did not disclose financial terms. Meta confirmed the purchase to TechCrunch but would not say more. The deal adds Meta to a growing group of AI companies trying to control the tools developers use, as coding has become a main path to AI adoption and enterprise spending, Axios reported.axios.com+1
"I am very excited to share that Conductor is joining Meta! We have some big, crazy plans for the next interface," CEO Charlie Holtz wrote on X. He said the team will work with Nat Friedman and Alexandr Wang at Meta Superintelligence Labs, adding, "I'm convinced MSL has the highest talent density of all the labs." Holtz also said Conductor would have "something new" for customers early next year, according to TechCrunch. Sources told Axios that Meta expects the team's fast product development to help it build its next generation of AI coding products.techcrunch.com+2
Conductor's current products will close in stages. New sign-ups and downloads stopped on November 4, and Pro subscribers now get paid features for free, SiliconANGLE reported. Conductor Cloud will become read-only on November 13 and shut down on November 20, according to The Verge. After that, the company will start deleting users' cloud data. Active subscribers will get refunds. The local Mac app will keep receiving new models and critical bug fixes until early 2027, and Conductor said it has never sold user data or trained models on it, per SiliconANGLE.siliconangle.com+1
Holtz and CTO Jackson de Campos founded Conductor in 2024. Its software gives each agent an isolated copy of a codebase, then lets the developer review and merge the agents' work. It supports outside agents such as Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. The startup raised a $22 million Series A in March from Spark Capital and Matrix, and says more than 100,000 people use it, SiliconANGLE reported. Engineers at Meta, Google Alphabet Inc. and Spotify were already using the product before the deal.siliconangle.com
Meta has spent months trying to catch up in AI. It launched its own coding agent, Muse Code, in August, according to TechCrunch. The deal came the same day OpenAI said it plans to buy Pierre Computer, another developer tools startup, Axios reported. In its words, Meta is betting that the future of AI coding is about "making it easier for developers to manage armies" of agents.axios.com+1
