The achievement means global solar capacity has tripled in under five years, compressing deployment timelines that once took a decade into mere months.
After crossing the 100-gigawatt mark in 2012, it took the world a full decade to deploy its first terawatt of solar power. An additional terawatt — enough to meet all of US power demand at its peak — took less than three years to build. China has been the main driver of the second and third terawatts, taking the baton from wealthy nations that subsidized early adoption. But that dominance comes with complications — Chinese solar deployment has outpaced supporting infrastructure like transmission lines and batteries, leading to increased curtailment of solar production during peak hours. Analysts expect China's deployment to slow, with the country's latest five-year plan prioritizing renewables consumption over production.energyconnects
Meanwhile, countries like Pakistan, Nigeria, and the Philippines have seen rapid increases in rooftop solar, and the number of countries with at least 1 gigawatt of solar installed grew to 74 last year, up from 42 in 2020. The solar boom faces a theoretical ceiling: once solar meets all daytime demand, additional capacity loses value. Regions like California and Australia already experience negative electricity prices during sunny hours.
