  • Une étude menée par l'Université de Chicago et publiée jeudi dans Science a révélé que le séisme de Tohoku de 2011 a envoyé des ondes de cisaillement vers le noyau terrestre, lesquelles sont revenues en environ 15 minutes.
  • Les ondes de retour ont déclenché un glissement simultané le long de quatre limites de plaques tectoniques, déplaçant le Japon jusqu'à six millimètres vers l'est — la plus vaste zone de rupture jamais enregistrée.
  • Les chercheurs affirment que cette découverte révèle un risque sismique jusqu'alors inconnu : les ondes réfléchies par le noyau peuvent réactiver des zones de faille quelques minutes après un séisme majeur.
