Une assemblée romaine antique au design unique mise au jour en Turquie

  • Des archéologues à Laodicée, dans le sud-ouest de la Turquie, ont mis au jour un bâtiment d'assemblée romain vieux de 2 050 ans doté d'un mur extérieur pentagonal unique et d'un design intérieur hexagonal jamais documenté auparavant dans l'ancienne Anatolie.
  • La structure, datant de la fin du Ier siècle avant notre ère sous le règne de l'empereur Auguste, a servi de centre administratif et judiciaire gouvernant Laodicée et sept à dix villes environnantes jusqu'au VIIe siècle de notre ère.
  • Le bâtiment accueillait 600 à 800 membres du conseil répartis sur 17 rangées de sièges, avec les noms inscrits des chefs et des membres de l'assemblée révélant un système représentatif diversifié comprenant des anciens, des jeunes et des citoyens.
  • Une statue centrale assise représentant probablement le juge en chef présente une tête qui est deux siècles plus ancienne que son corps, ce qui suggère que les portraits étaient remplacés au fil du changement de direction.
  • La découverte ajoute à l'importance archéologique de Laodicée en tant que capitale provinciale romaine majeure, le site contenant également le plus grand stade de l'Anatolie romaine et figurant sur la liste indicative du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
