morningstar+1unitemorningstar+1Israeli AI robotics startup Enigma emerged from stealth on Monday with a $71 million seed round co-led by Index Ventures and Ribbit Capital, announcing what it calls the world's first live public AI robotics experience — a fleet of more than 100 robots that anyone can operate online in real time.morningstar+2
Founded less than a year ago by Jonathan Jacobi and Gal Niv, Enigma builds AI models designed to make robots intelligent and simple to use across any hardware. Rather than launching with a commercial product, the company is opening its proprietary robots — housed in facilities in Israel and California — to the public through its robots.online platform. Users can direct the machines to perform tasks such as painting with a brush, fencing with swords, or combining flasks of liquid in basic chemistry demonstrations.unite+1
The company's thesis is that robotics is bottlenecked not by hardware capability but by the difficulty of instructing machines. "Even the most capable current models leave users at the point of 'Forget it, I'll just do it myself,'" Jacobi told TechCrunch, according to Unite.AI's reporting. Enigma intends to use the interaction data generated by untrained users to improve both its interface design and underlying models.unite
Jacobi and Niv met as teenagers competing in hacking contests and later served together in Israel's Unit 8200, the military intelligence unit whose alumni have produced numerous venture-backed companies. Jacobi was, by his own account, the youngest-ever employee at Microsoft , recruited by Wiz co-founder Assaf Rappaport. Neither founder has a robotics background.unite
Index Ventures partner Shardul Shah, whose early bets include Datadog, told TechCrunch that the founders' outsider perspective is the appeal. "Someone who's an insider may start with the capability of teleoperation or dexterity, but Enigma is starting from a very different place: 'What's the ultimate experience?'" he said.unite
Participation in the round came from Conviction Partners and executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind, xAI, Cognition, and Wiz. Ribbit Capital, known primarily for fintech investments including Robinhood and Coinbase , represents a departure into robotics hardware.theglobeandmail+2
Enigma has disclosed no valuation, no named customers, and no revenue. Jacobi said the company is already working with firms in healthcare, logistics, and entertainment but declined to identify them. The next milestone worth watching is whether the open-ended experiment in human-robot interaction produces a shipped capability — or whether the interaction data itself becomes the company's durable asset.unite
