euronews+1euronews+1coindeskThe European Central Bank on Monday launched Pontes, a platform that bridges blockchain-based financial markets with the euro area's existing payment infrastructure, allowing banks to settle wholesale tokenized transactions in central bank money for the first time.euronews+1
The move positions Europe's central bank as both architect and early participant in tokenized finance. Alongside the launch, the ECB said it has begun preparatory work to invest a small portion of its €23 billion own-funds portfolio in tokenized securities, making it a direct user of its own system.coindesk+1
Pontes — Latin for "bridges" — connects distributed ledger technology platforms used by financial institutions with the Eurosystem's TARGET Services, enabling the cash side of tokenized asset trades to settle in central bank euros rather than commercial bank money or stablecoins. The absence of a risk-free settlement asset had been one of the main barriers holding back institutional adoption of blockchain-based markets.crypto+1
"Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenised finance ecosystem," said Piero Cipollone, a member of the ECB's Executive Board. "It will give an important advantage to help it scale."marketsmedia+1
Thirteen institutions have completed onboarding and can use the system immediately, including Deutsche Bank , Santander Banco Santander, S.A. , Société Générale, KfW, and the European Investment Bank, alongside four DLT operators including Deutsche Börse's Clearstream. The platform will initially operate during business hours, with full implementation and extended availability expected by 2028.euronews+2
The ECB's planned investments will draw from its own-funds portfolio, which generates income to cover operating expenses and sits outside monetary policy. Initial purchases will focus on euro-denominated debt issued by euro area governments, regional authorities, agencies, and European supranational institutions. No specific amount or timeline was disclosed; the Executive Board will determine those details once preparatory work is complete.thenextweb+1
The goal, the ECB said, is to gain first-hand experience across the full investment lifecycle — from trade execution and settlement to portfolio management — rather than observing tokenized markets solely from a regulatory perspective.marketsmedia+1
The launch underscores a widening gap between European and American approaches to digital finance. Washington has moved away from a Federal Reserve digital currency in favor of privately issued stablecoins, while the New York Stock Exchange is building a blockchain-based venue for around-the-clock trading. Frankfurt is betting that public central bank money should remain the settlement anchor as markets digitize.euronews
Pontes is separate from the retail digital euro, a consumer payment instrument still working through EU legislation. A pilot involving 36 payment providers is expected to begin in September 2027, with potential issuance targeted for 2029.ambcrypto+1
"The Eurosystem is working to enable a more integrated, innovative and resilient European financial market in the digital age," ECB President Christine Lagarde said. "We will continue to make progress in close collaboration with the market."marketsmedia
