Sri Lanka has recorded 95,035 dengue cases and 72 deaths so far in 2026, according to the National Dengue Control Unit. July was the worst month, with nearly 30,000 cases reported. The Western Province accounts for more than half of all infections, with Gampaha and Colombo districts bearing the heaviest burden. In Yemen, residents and a health official confirmed on Sunday that a dengue fever outbreak has struck Al-Matoun district in Al-Jawf governorate. The country has been grappling with dengue throughout 2026; Al Jazeera reported that 7,815 suspected cases and 33 deaths were recorded between January and mid-July across government-controlled areas.aljazeera+1
In Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, confirmed dengue cases rose from 392 to 478 in one week, with 86 new cases — up from 53 the week prior, according to Dawn. Peshawar and Kohat are the worst-hit districts. More than 15,000 lady health workers have been deployed to educate communities about preventing mosquito breeding.dawn
In India, Ludhiana recorded 21 confirmed dengue cases and 50 malaria cases between April and late August, with health teams collecting nearly 5,000 blood samples across the district. District epidemiologist Dr. Supreet Kaur urged residents to eliminate stagnant water, warning that "even small quantities of stagnant water can become breeding sites".daijiworld
Adding a layer of urgency, a review published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution describes what researchers call the "drought-disease paradox" — a pattern in which drying conditions can amplify outbreaks of cholera, West Nile virus, and dengue. Co-author Tara Stewart Merrill of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies told Grist, "We think a water-borne disease should thrive only when there's plenty of water, but in some cases they thrive when there's less water".
