unite+1siliconrepublicuniteCambridge-based startup CuspAI has closed a $450 million Series B funding round and launched a 48-member industry coalition aimed at using artificial intelligence to discover new materials for chipmaking, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. The round, announced on July 20, values the two-year-old company at $2.6 billion — up from $520 million just nine months earlier.unite+1
The Series B was led by Kleiner Perkins and NEA, with participation from Jeff Bezos's investment office Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. , the UK's Sovereign AI Venture Fund, the Netherlands' Invest-NL, and Glade Brook Capital Partners, according to Bloomberg. Existing backers Temasek, Prosus, and Northzone also returned.siliconrepublic+1
The deal was first reported by the Financial Times in June, when term sheets had been signed at roughly $400 million. The final figure landed at $450 million, bringing CuspAI's total funding to more than $580 million since its $30 million seed in 2024.unite+2
Kleiner Perkins partner Josh Coyne, who co-led the round, said CuspAI's co-founders "design for materials that can actually be built, not just ones a model can dream up."siliconrepublic
Alongside the fundraise, CuspAI launched the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of more than 45 founding partners including Nvidia , Meta , Samsung, Hyundai Motor Group, Applied Materials , Tokyo Electron, and Lam Research . The group aims to pool computing power, proprietary data, and laboratory resources to build software that accelerates materials discovery beyond traditional trial-and-error methods.unite+1
CuspAI co-founders Dr. Chad Edwards and Prof. Max Welling framed the challenge in stark terms: "If we don't make progress fast, the next 50 years of industrial progress will be constrained by a single challenge: the world needs materials that don't yet exist."siliconrepublic
CuspAI operates in an increasingly crowded field. Periodic Labs raised a $200 million seed led by Andreessen Horowitz at a reported $1 billion valuation, while Flagship Pioneering spun out Lila Sciences with $200 million. Established players like Schrödinger and Dassault Systèmes are also pursuing AI-driven materials design.unite
The company's product works as an inverse-design system: customers specify desired material properties and CuspAI's models propose candidate structures intended to be manufacturable, not merely plausible in simulation. Its client roster already includes ASML , Meta, and Hyundai, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has publicly named CuspAI as a company he is watching.unite
Whether the coalition becomes shared infrastructure or a marketing overlay will depend on whether CuspAI's six-month discovery cycles survive contact with manufacturing at scale.
