  • Archaeologists from South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University and the Institute of Archaeology uncovered a 14th-century Genoese fortress called Ginestra beneath Odesa's Primorsky Boulevard near the Duke de Richelieu monument.
  • The three-week excavation also resolved a nearly 200-year mystery by confirming the location of the Ottoman fortress of Hadzhibey, which was blown up by Russian troops in 1789 during the Russo-Turkish War.
  • The discoveries revealed Odesa's layered history spanning 2,500 years, from a 6th-century BCE Greek colony called Harbor of Istrians to the medieval Italian and Ottoman fortifications.
  • Ivan Liptuga, director of Odesa City Council's culture department, called this "a major event for the city, for the country, for history," noting it enhances the universal value of Odesa's UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
  • The Republic of Genoa maintained an extensive network of Black Sea settlements and trading posts from the 11th to 18th centuries, with this discovery bridging the gap between better-documented Crimean strongholds and the western Black Sea coast.
