bloomberg+1cryptobriefing+1bloombergVitol Group, the world's largest independent commodity trader, has secured exclusive fuel supply agreements with at least five countries in southern and East Africa, leveraging disruptions from the Iran conflict to become the dominant supplier to a region almost entirely dependent on fuel imports, according to a Bloomberg investigation published on August 17.bloomberg
The deals have placed Vitol in what Bloomberg described as "an unusually powerful position" across the region, where fuel keeps cars, trucks, tractors, and boats running. The company seized on the crisis triggered after the US attacked Iran in early March, which sent oil prices surging and disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.finance.yahoo+2
The exclusive agreements span multiple countries. In Zambia, the government suspended its open-access regime to the Tazama pipeline in April, granting Vitol sole access to supply diesel through the infrastructure linking the country's copper mining region to the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The International Monetary Fund has called for an end to that arrangement.360mozambique
In Namibia, the government granted Vitol exclusive fuel import rights for a three-month period from July to September, citing the need to reduce fuel prices and protect consumers from rising costs. Namibia also overturned a five-year restriction on the trader in July, allowing it to once again supply fuel to local retailer Nasan Energies.facebook+1
The International Energy Agency has warned of risks to oil products bound for Africa, with the region facing a potential shortfall of 1.8 million barrels per day this quarter. Vitol's fuel station business, which owns the Engen brand, is now the largest in Africa by volume sold. Its subsidiary Vivo Energy supplies fuel to customers in 28 countries.vitol+2
Separately, Vitol announced its first acquisition of a data center campus. VC Renewables, the company's renewable energy arm, acquired a 600 MW campus in South Carolina from Meridian Gridworks, a firm founded in 2025. Bloomberg reported the deal on August 17 as one of the first instances of a major commodity trader entering artificial intelligence infrastructure.bloomberg+1
"The rapid growth of digital infrastructure is creating significant demand for reliable, flexible and increasingly sustainable power," said Andrew De Pass, Vitol's Head of Energy Transition Investments. Meridian Gridworks will continue overseeing development while Vitol contributes expertise in natural gas, solar, and energy storage. The acquisition aligns with Vitol's "powered land" model, pairing energy generation directly with data center facilities to bypass grid connection delays that can stretch months or years.vitol
