UN Security Council condemns drone strike on UAE nuclear plant

The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday unanimously condemned the drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, calling it a violation of international law, according to Reuters. The statement came more than a week after a drone struck an electrical generator at the Arab world's only nuclear power facility on May 17, sparking a fire but causing no injuries or radiation release.internazionale

The Attack and Its Origins

The strike hit a generator located outside the inner security perimeter of the Barakah plant in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region on the morning of May 17. UAE air defenses intercepted two of three drones that entered the country's airspace, but a third reached its target. The UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation confirmed that the plant's core systems were unaffected and all units continued operating normally.kureansiklopedi+3

Two days later, the UAE Defense Ministry announced that its investigation had confirmed all drones originated from Iraqi territory. The UAE said last week that six drones in total had been launched against it from Iraq, including the one that caused the fire at the plant. Iraq is home to Iranian-backed Shiite militia groups that have claimed attacks against targets in the region during the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. No group has claimed responsibility for the Barakah strike, and Iran has formally denied involvement.arabnews+4

International Response

The Security Council held an emergency session on May 19, requested by Bahrain, during which IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi warned that a direct hit on the plant "could result in a very high release of radioactivity to the environment". UN Secretary-General António Guterres said attacks on nuclear installations "are totally unacceptable" and constitute "a violation of international law".youtube+2

The UAE's ambassador told the Council that attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities are a "red line", while Denmark, France, Pakistan, and other members strongly condemned the strike. The Council's formal statement issued Tuesday did not attribute blame for the attack.press.un+3

Regional Tensions

The attack unfolded against the backdrop of escalating hostilities across the Middle East. Denmark's representative noted renewed Iranian attacks against Gulf countries since the beginning of May. The Los Angeles Times reported the strike underscores how Iran's shadow war with the United States is spilling across the region, even as reports indicate Israel is coordinating with Washington regarding potential renewed military action.npr+2
