Trump to host Kennedy Center Honors as first president emcee

President Donald Trump unveiled his first picks for Kennedy Center Honors recipients Wednesday, marking the most dramatic shift in the prestigious awards since their inception in 1978. Trump announced he will personally host the December ceremony, becoming the first sitting president to serve as emcee rather than merely attending as an honored guest.

The honorees include country music legend George Strait, rock band KISS, actor Sylvester Stallone, disco icon Gloria Gaynor, and Broadway star Michael Crawford. Trump claimed he was "about 98% involved" in selecting the recipients and acknowledged rejecting numerous candidates he deemed "too woke".wtop+1

Unprecedented Presidential Control

Trump's announcement caps eight tumultuous months since he dismissed the Kennedy Center's board in February and installed himself as chairman. The president fired 18 board members, including longtime chairman David Rubenstein, and replaced them with political loyalists including Second Lady Usha Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and former ambassador Richard Grenell.oberlinreview+2

"In the few short months since I became chairman of the board, the Kennedy Center, we've completely reversed the decline of this cherished national institution," Trump declared Wednesday. He credited his administration with ending "woke political programming" and promised to restore the center as the "premier venue for performing arts anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world".foxnews+1

Cultural Programming Under Fire

The Kennedy Center takeover triggered widespread cancellations and protests throughout 2025. Broadway sensation "Hamilton" pulled out of a planned 2026 engagement, with producer Jeffrey Seller citing the center's "new culture" and "partisan policies". The children's musical "Finn," widely interpreted as an LGBTQ+ allegory, was canceled, along with performances by the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington and multiple WorldPride events.cbsnews+4

According to CBS News reporting, more than 20 performances have been scrapped since Trump's takeover. High-profile board members including television producer Shonda Rhimes, musician Ben Folds, and opera star Renée Fleming resigned in protest.georgetownvoice+1

Breaking Tradition

Trump's decision to host the ceremony breaks decades of precedent. Since the awards began, presidents have traditionally attended as guests rather than taking the stage. The announcement also marks a stark reversal from Trump's first term, when he boycotted the Kennedy Center Honors after artists threatened to protest his attendance.abc7

The honors ceremony will air on CBS in December, though the network's broadcast rights expire after this year's event with no renewal announced. House Republicans have separately proposed renaming the center's Opera House after First Lady Melania Trump, though no action has been taken.wtop+1

Trump hinted at future ambitions during Wednesday's announcement, joking "Next year, we'll honor Trump" and referencing his previous suggestion to rename the venue the "Trump/Kennedy Center".reviewjournal+1
