reuters+1bloomberg+1marketscreener+1Shopify reported second-quarter results on Wednesday that handily beat Wall Street expectations, sending shares soaring in premarket trading as the e-commerce platform signaled that its AI-driven strategy continues to accelerate growth despite a challenging consumer environment.
The Ottawa-based company posted revenue of $3.58 billion for the quarter ended June 30, a 34% increase year-over-year that topped the analyst consensus of $3.45 billion. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.42 also surpassed the $0.40 estimate. Gross merchandise volume — the total value of goods sold through Shopify's platform — grew 32% to $115.6 billion, while free cash flow reached $654 million, producing an 18% margin.reuters+2
"This was a monster quarter: more than 30% growth in GMV AND revenue AND gross profit AND free cash flow," said Shopify President Harley Finkelstein. "We power every kind of business, and with AI, we're expanding what's possible for all of them."investing+1
Perhaps more striking than the backward-looking results was Shopify's third-quarter outlook. The company expects revenue to grow at a "low-thirties percentage rate," well above the 26-27% increase analysts had forecast. According to Bloomberg, this would mark the sixth consecutive quarter of revenue growth exceeding 30%. Shopify also projected gross profit growth at a mid-to-high twenties percentage rate, versus expectations of a 24.1% rise.bloomberg+2
U.S.-listed shares rose as much as 33.8% in premarket trading, according to Bloomberg. If premarket gains hold, the stock is set to recoup all of its year-to-date losses — shares had fallen more than 23% through Monday's close.marketscreener+2
The results suggest Shopify's investments in artificial intelligence are paying off. Through partnerships with OpenAI, Google Alphabet Inc. , and Microsoft , the company has helped merchants reach more customers via AI chatbots and search queries. Its Sidekick AI assistant has seen steady adoption from small- and medium-sized businesses looking to execute tasks faster and more cheaply.reuters+1
The strong performance came despite headwinds from geopolitical tensions and gas price spikes stemming from the Iran conflict, which have strained consumer budgets. Reuters reported that consumer demand has nonetheless shown resilience thanks to a strong labor market and continued wage growth.reuters
Merchant solutions revenue climbed 37% to $2.78 billion, while subscription solutions revenue increased 22% to $802 million. Operating income surged 68% to $488 million. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister noted "solid results across all merchant sizes, channels, and geographies."investing
