Sanders calls for AI pause and superintelligence ban

US Senator Bernie Sanders on Saturday called on President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to negotiate a treaty to pause advanced artificial intelligence development and ban artificial superintelligence, arguing that recent calls by leading AI executives to slow the pace of development do not go far enough.

A Response to Industry's Own Warnings

Sanders' remarks followed an unusual moment of alignment among rival AI leaders. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a nearly 4,000-word essay on September 12 titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," warning that AI capabilities are advancing faster than the industry's ability to ensure safety.
