srnnewsrterteEuropean Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday condemned what she called "an escalating campaign of threats" after Romania scrambled F-16 fighter jets to destroy a naval drone carrying explosives near the Neptun Deep gas platform in the Black Sea.rte+1
"This is hybrid warfare," von der Leyen wrote on X. "The founding mission of our Union is to preserve peace. Today, that also means having the capacity to deter provocation and aggression". In a separate statement, she said Russia "is losing the war it started" and "is retaliating by targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure," calling for increased air defense support for Ukraine.modern+2
Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta said the decision to destroy the drone was made "to protect the lives of the several hundred people working on the platform and to secure critical infrastructure". Ukraine confirmed the drone did not belong to its forces, and Romanian President Nicusor Dan directly blamed Russia, condemning "the intensification of these types of irresponsible incidents on the part of the Russian Federation".rte
The incident follows the destruction of two Gerbera-type drones near the same gas project on August 11. Neptun Deep, jointly owned by OMV Petrom and state producer Romgaz, is expected to make Romania the EU's largest gas producer when it comes online in 2027. NATO states Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey have neutralized more than 150 mines drifting across Black Sea trade lanes, and the three countries agreed in July to expand a joint task force to include missions protecting critical infrastructure.reuters+1
The drone incident came on the same day Russia launched a major overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 40, according to Reuters. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said a failure by allies to replenish Ukraine's stock of air defense missiles was costing lives. A children's hospital and residential buildings were among the structures damaged.londonlovesbusiness+1
Poland activated defensive air operations along its southeastern border in response to Russian long-range aviation activity, while the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant suffered its 27th loss of external power since Russia seized the facility in 2022.londonlovesbusiness
The convergence of threats — explosive sea drones near EU energy infrastructure, ballistic missile strikes on a European capital, and repeated nuclear safety incidents — illustrates the broadening reach of the conflict beyond Ukraine's borders. As von der Leyen put it: "An escalating campaign of threats is underway, unsettling our citizens and seeking to divide our Union".rte
