  • A 5,000-year-old rock engraving discovered near Aswan in Egypt's Lower Nile Valley may depict one of the earliest representations of Egyptian kingship, dating to the dawn of the First Dynasty around 3100 BCE.
  • The well-preserved carving shows a ceremonial boat being dragged by five figures, with a seated figure aboard displaying an elongated chin resembling a false beard—a symbol associated with early Egyptian royal authority.
  • Researchers led by Dorian Vanhulle from the Musée du Malgré-Tout analyzed the panel using photogrammetry, finding it stylistically consistent with other art from the transition between Protodynastic and Early Dynastic periods.
  • The engraving was discovered in 2022 during survey work documenting rock art ahead of New Aswan City development, carved into sandstone in an area that has served as a quarry since at least 330 BCE.
  • The discovery provides rare visual evidence from Egypt's formative period when the country was transitioning into a unified kingdom under its first pharaoh, offering insights into how early rulers used symbolic imagery to communicate power and authority.
