In an email sent to all creators on the platform and shared publicly, Conte wrote that the company is undergoing both a "workforce reduction" and "changing our organizational structure and how we work," including flattening the organization, refocusing teams, and evolving operations to adapt more quickly to change.404 Media
Conte drew a careful distinction between AI replacing workers and AI reshaping how a company functions. "We are not making the above changes because we believe AI replaces humans," he wrote. "The more we have learned to use these new tools, the clearer it has become that they are not substitutes for the creativity, judgment, detail orientation, or craftsmanship that our teammates have in spades."404 Media
He added that the company's product vision and business remain "predicated on the value of human creativity and human connection," but acknowledged that AI "has fundamentally transformed the tech industry, though, including how we work, how we build products, how we communicate, and more."404 Media
Affected employees will receive at least 16 weeks of pay, will remain on payroll through the company's August 20 vesting date, and will get one additional week of pay for every full year at the company. Healthcare coverage extends through year-end, and workers receive a $1,500 stipend to replace company laptops.404 Media
The layoffs come just weeks after Patreon announced a partnership with Cloudflare to block AI training crawlers at the network level across all posts on the platform. In that announcement, Conte framed the effort around three demands creators should make of AI companies: consent, credit, and compensation.AI Weekly+2
Thursday's cuts mark the fourth round of layoffs at Patreon since 2020 and the largest in percentage terms. The company shed 13 percent of staff during the pandemic in 2020, 17 percent in 2022, and 36 employees in 2024. Conte told creators the business remains "healthy and strong" and that the core offering connecting creators with paying fans is not changing.wsj+3
