Opposition leader Gandhi detained at protest outside Modi’s residence

Delhi Police on Tuesday forcibly removed and detained Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav after they staged a sit-in outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence demanding accountability over police action against student protesters.whbl+2

The dramatic confrontation unfolded on Lok Kalyan Marg, where Gandhi and dozens of opposition lawmakers began their dharna around 3:30 p.m., a day after police clashed with youth demonstrators marching to Parliament over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak scandal.rediff+1

Confrontation and Injury

"We have marched to PM Modi's house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday," Gandhi posted on X before the detention. He demanded the resignations of Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.ndtv+1

After roughly 20 minutes, Minister of State Jitendra Singh and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan approached the protest site and urged Gandhi to withdraw. When police moved to clear the area, Gandhi was seen lying on the ground resisting removal by security personnel. An aide said he suffered an injury below his left eye during the scuffle, with Congress releasing video of the wound.youtube+2

Priyanka Gandhi was filmed clinging to the door of a police bus even after it began moving. Gandhi was subsequently taken to Chhatrasal Stadium in Model Town, while his sister was brought to Mandir Marg police station.rediff+1

The NEET Crisis

The protests stem from the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination in May after authorities confirmed that the question paper — sat by roughly 2.3 million students on May 3 — had been leaked. The National Testing Agency scrapped the results and ordered a re-examination, while the government referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation.openthemagazine+2

Student anger has intensified in the months since, with Monday's march to Parliament drawing a police response that Congress called a "lathi-charge" on peaceful demonstrators. Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited injured students at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital earlier on Tuesday before leading the march to Modi's residence.ndtv+1

Congress president Kharge called the government a "cowardly authoritarian" administration, saying "Modi-Shah are guilty against our youth." The government described the protest outside the prime minister's house as a security breach.rediff+1
