OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 models launch inside AWS’s Kiro coding tool

OpenAI announced on Monday that its GPT-5.6 model family is now available inside Kiro, AWS's Amazon.com, Inc. ↘ 1.54% spec-driven development environment, deepening a partnership between the two companies that has escalated to more than $100 billion in committed spending over the past year. The integration follows a separate price cut to OpenAI's flagship Sol model announced on August 21, dropping API costs by more than 20% for a three-month promotional window.

Kiro Integration and Cost Claims

The GPT-5.6 lineup — Sol, Terra, and Luna — is now accessible within Kiro's structured development workflows, where the environment converts high-level product intent into requirements documents, technical designs, and sequenced task lists before the model begins generating code. Joint testing by OpenAI and AWS on Terminal-Bench 2.1 found that GPT-5.6 Terra completed tasks at roughly 82% lower cost when operating inside Kiro's spec-driven harness.openai+1

The 82% figure measures cost per successful task, not accuracy. OpenAI's own evaluations place Terra at 87.4% on Terminal-Bench 2.1, against 88.8% for Sol. The announcement does not break out how much of the reduction comes from the Kiro harness versus the model's improved token efficiency.unite

Sol Price Cut Amid Intensifying Competition

Three days before the Kiro announcement, OpenAI reduced GPT-5.6 Sol's API pricing from $5 to $4 per million input tokens and from $30 to $20 per million output tokens — a promotional rate running through approximately November 2026, according to Reuters. A Relationship Built on Scale

The Kiro integration sits atop a commercial relationship that has expanded rapidly. OpenAI and AWS signed a $38 billion compute agreement in November 2025, then expanded it in February 2026 to $100 billion over eight years, with Amazon investing $50 billion in OpenAI and the company committing to consume roughly 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity.
