breakingthenews+1csoonline+1tech-insider+1OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Tuesday that the company will hold an event in San Francisco on September 16 to mark the launch of GPT-6 Astra, the AI model that has dominated industry conversation since its release five days ago.
"We're getting together in SF on September 16 to talk about the model, what we should build next, and mostly just to hang out," Altman wrote on X. A dedicated event page describes the gathering as "GPT-6 Community Night," billed as "an evening under the stars with OpenAI". Applications to attend are open through the end of the week.x+2
The celebration comes after a rollout that was equal parts impressive and chaotic. OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3 to a limited group of organizations in its Daybreak cybersecurity program, holding back access from the paying subscribers who expected it immediately. Altman publicly apologized for the "messy" rollout within hours, and broader access followed by September 4–5 for Pro, Enterprise, Business, and API users.unite+2
The model has since drawn attention for a set of benchmark results that place it well ahead of prior OpenAI systems, including a reported 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 74.1% on DeepSWE, and a perfect 100% on ExploitBench. That last score — along with the model's reported ability to discover and exploit two previously unknown zero-day vulnerabilities without human guidance — pushed GPT-6 Astra to the "Critical" level under OpenAI's internal Preparedness Framework, a first for the company.cnbc+1
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang added fuel to the launch by declaring on X that "AGI has arrived," while OpenAI president Greg Brockman described it as a "generational leap in capability". Independent tests from the ARC Prize Foundation showed Astra setting new highs that closely matched human scores, with researcher Greg Kamradt calling it a "meaningful step change in frontier-model performance".independent
Not everyone agrees. Altman himself had called AGI "at best… a very poorly defined term" just days before launch. Tech consultant Marko Tasic dismissed Huang's declaration as "just PR before IPO".independent
The September 16 event precedes OpenAI's broader DevDay 2026, scheduled for September 29 in San Francisco with a keynote from Altman. GPT-6 Astra is now available across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers, as well as through the OpenAI API at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, and through Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock Amazon.com, Inc. .openai+2
