The update, first reported by Axios, introduces improvements across several areas. OpenAI says Images 2.5 produces "sharper details, faster generation, more precise editing, and better tools for creating and sharing". The company claims image generation latency has been reduced by up to 50% compared with Images 2.0.9to5mac+1
On its official X account, OpenAI highlighted "improved fidelity for more natural, recognizable images" and "consistent details across multiple edits". According to OpenAI's system card, the model "produces more consistent results when editing images, and improves infographic accuracy and layout," allowing users to "change an image's setting, style, or composition while retaining more of the details".x+1
A new "Sketch" feature lets users draw directly within ChatGPT and use those drawings as references for image generation. OpenAI is also adding templates for popular image formats and a prompt-sharing feature that allows users to share their image generation ideas with others.9to5mac
For developers, OpenAI is releasing two API models: GPT-Image-2.5 Flare, described as the default option for most applications with the same 50% latency reduction, and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, aimed at "premium visual workflows" such as production-ready campaign creative and polished product imagery.9to5mac
Images 2.5 is rolling out to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex users across all subscription tiers on desktop, mobile, and web.9to5mac
The launch comes on a bumpy day for OpenAI's infrastructure. The company is also investigating an ongoing outage causing image generation failures and file upload errors in ChatGPT. According to BleepingComputer, hundreds of users reported issues on DownDetector, with OpenAI acknowledging "elevated errors affecting image generation in ChatGPT and the Images API". The company said it was "applying mitigations and assessing their effect".bleepingcomputer
The release also follows last week's launch of GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's latest flagship AI model, and a separate major outage on Thursday that affected nearly every ChatGPT component.openai+1
