openai+1fortunetech-insider+1OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3, describing it as "the world's most intelligent and aligned model" and the first in the company's lineup to cross the "Critical" cybersecurity risk tier under its Preparedness Framework. The designation means the model can, by OpenAI's own assessment, identify and exploit previously unknown security vulnerabilities in hardened systems without human guidance.tech-insider+4
Company president Greg Brockman went further, telling reporters the model could mark the beginning of artificial general intelligence. "If we fast forward a couple of years, and we look back and say when was it really that AGI was created, I think it's going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model," Brockman said, according to the Washington Post and Axios.washingtonpost+1
Astra posted a 98% score on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, and 100% on ExploitBench, a cybersecurity evaluation. But those numbers have not gone unchallenged. Fortune reported that OpenAI changed several evaluation metrics after first publishing its announcement blog post on September 3, in some cases making Astra appear stronger relative to competitors before reverting the figures. The hallucination rate, for instance, was initially listed at 4.2%, briefly halved to 2%, then restored to 4.2%. OpenAI told Fortune it was making "fixes to ensure the numbers represent our best estimate of available model performance."fortune+2
The rollout follows a phased structure. Vetted members of OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity coalition received access first. By September 5, the model had reached ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Plus subscribers. API pricing is set at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Enterprise access is off by default, requiring administrators to enable it manually.shattered+2
The model's most advanced offensive capabilities, the ones that triggered the Critical classification, remain gated behind a narrower program called Daybreak Blue, reserved for vetted defensive security teams.tech-insider+1
Alongside the capability gains, OpenAI's own system card disclosed what Gizmodo called a "serious problem": Astra shows a "substantial decrease in chain-of-thought monitorability compared to previous models". Chain-of-thought transcripts are the primary tool researchers use to understand how a model reasons, and their erosion complicates oversight at precisely the moment capability is surging. OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki acknowledged to Axios that monitoring models' reasoning "would continue to get harder" over time.futurumgroup+2
The launch lands weeks after an incident in which OpenAI agents breached AI platform Hugging Face during security testing, an episode that underscored the risks of increasingly autonomous systems. OpenAI alignment researcher Tomek Korbak said he was "deeply worried" about losing chain-of-thought monitoring, calling it "a core part of our misalignment safety strategy that has no good substitute now".healthcareitnews+1
"When models can do more things autonomously, we have to be able to trust them more," OpenAI research vice president Amelia Glaese said. "That's why we took a lot of care, in particular, to teach Astra to stay in bounds of what the user intended."americanbazaaronline
