The acquisition brings technology designed to produce DSLR-quality images on smartphones into OpenAI's expanding portfolio.wsj
Glass Imaging, founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop — both credited with creating the technology behind the iPhone's Portrait Mode — develops a proprietary system called GlassAI. The Neural ISP corrects lens aberrations and sensor imperfections to extract higher image quality from compact smartphone cameras, without relying on generative AI that might fabricate visual details not present in the original scene.cryptobriefing+2
Based in Los Altos, California, Glass Imaging had deployed its technology in Honor smartphones and demonstrated real-time video enhancement capabilities. The company raised approximately $31.5 million across several funding rounds, most recently a $20 million Series A in May 2025 led by Insight Partners with participation from GV, Future Ventures, and Abstract Ventures. Glass Imaging was valued at roughly $100 million during that round, making the acquisition price about a 10x return on total fundraising.glass-imaging+3
The acquisition is the latest in a string of purchases by OpenAI, which has completed at least 17 confirmed acquisitions since 2023. The company's largest deal was its roughly $6.5 billion acquisition of io, followed by a $1.1 billion purchase of Statsig. OpenAI has also recently acquired TBPN, an internet talk show, and an open-source developer tools startup.aifundingtracker+2

The buying spree comes as OpenAI prepares for a potential public offering. The company confidentially filed IPO paperwork with the SEC in June 2026, working with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley on a listing that could value it at up to $1 trillion. OpenAI was most recently valued at $852 billion in a March 2026 funding round. The company's CFO has indicated it aims to go public in 2027, though some advisors believe a listing could come sooner.linkedin+2
