ft+1stocktwits+1reuters+1NXP Semiconductors is in discussions to acquire Ambarella , a designer of AI-powered chips used in self-driving cars and security cameras, in a deal that would further consolidate the semiconductor industry around autonomous vehicle technology, according to the Financial Times.marketwatch
Ambarella shares surged roughly 18-19% on Friday following the report, while NXP fell more than 3%. Ambarella's market capitalization stood at approximately $3.3 billion before the news broke.reuters+3
The potential acquisition would bolster NXP's capabilities in software-defined vehicles, radar, and electrification, as Ambarella develops low-power AI chips and software for edge devices including cameras, vehicles, and robotics. NXP's automotive business is expected to generate roughly half of the Dutch company's projected $15.1 billion in revenue this year.x+2
Ambarella's chips specialize in running complex AI models directly on devices rather than in the cloud — a capability critical for real-time camera vision in cars, where split-second decisions affect safety. The same technology serves security cameras and industrial systems, giving NXP potential exposure beyond the auto sector.stocktwits
Discussions are ongoing and might not lead to a transaction, the Financial Times reported. Other buyers could emerge or the talks could collapse altogether, according to people familiar with the matter. Neither NXP nor Ambarella responded to requests for comment from Reuters.reuters+2
The Financial Times did not disclose financial terms of the proposed buyout. Stifel had already reiterated a Buy rating on Ambarella with a $106 price target ahead of Friday's news.investing+1
The possible deal comes as NXP, which has largely stayed on the sidelines of major acquisitions since a $47 billion attempt to sell the company collapsed over regulatory hurdles years ago, looks to compete in the race for AI-related assets. Ambarella in May signed a landmark agreement with South Korea's Hanwha Group valued at more than $800 million in potential revenue over more than a decade for edge AI technology collaboration.stocktwits
