x+1finance.yahoo+1calcalistechNvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared on Sunday that artificial general intelligence has arrived, posting on X that OpenAI's newest model, GPT-6 Astra, was "trained on ~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72" before adding: "AGI has arrived". The post, which also promised "400K GPUs coming online next," represents Huang's most direct claim yet — and one that carries an inherent tension, given that Nvidia is the primary supplier of the hardware powering AI development.finance.yahoo
Huang has been building toward this declaration for months. In March, he told podcaster Lex Fridman, "I think it's now. I think we've achieved AGI," though he qualified the statement by acknowledging that AI agents could not build a company like Nvidia. On Nvidia's August 26 earnings call, he went further, telling analysts that "for many tasks, we could say that we've already achieved AGI" and dismissing traditional AGI benchmarks as "kind of senseless".pcmag+2
Sunday's post tied the claim directly to OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, which Huang said achieved state-of-the-art results on FrontierMath Tier 4, ARC-AGI 3, and TerminalBench-4.0. One detail drew attention: Huang initially posted that 300,000 GPU boxes trained the model before deleting the figure and reposting with a smaller number. Nvidia has not explained the discrepancy.finance.yahoo+1
OpenAI itself has not declared AGI achieved. The attached BeInCrypto report noted that OpenAI's president stopped short of the claim. The distinction matters: AGI — broadly defined as AI matching human-level intelligence across a range of tasks — has no agreed-upon definition, and no major scientific body has confirmed its arrival.beincrypto+1
Huang, meanwhile, sells the machines that make such milestones possible. Nvidia reported $96.2 billion in revenue for its most recent quarter, up 106% year over year, with data center infrastructure accounting for roughly 92% of sales. The company's relationship with OpenAI itself has been complicated. A $100 billion deal announced in September 2025 was described by Huang in February 2026 as "never a commitment," and Nvidia ultimately invested $30 billion as part of OpenAI's funding round — well below the original figure.calcalistech+2
Not everyone shares Huang's view. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said the industry is "nowhere close" to AGI, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has placed the timeline at one to three years. Experts continue to argue that current AI systems struggle with reliability, long-term planning, and real-world understanding. As one researcher put it bluntly: "Spoiler: no".siliconrepublic+2
Huang ended his post with a forward-looking promise — 400,000 more GPUs switching on soon. Whether the industry accepts his framing of AGI or not, the chips will keep shipping.x
