finance.yahoo+1businessinsider+1businessinsiderWhen Nvidia confirmed its $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face on Thursday, most observers focused on the deal's strategic implications for the AI industry. But buried in the oddly specific price tag — $12,930,300,000 — was a pair of Easter eggs that sent the internet scrambling to decode them.
Hugging Face co-founder Thomas Wolf dropped a hint shortly after the announcement, writing that there were "Hugging Face and Nvidia references hidden in our $12,930,300,000 acquisition price" and offering "special congrats" to anyone who could find them. The first puzzle was cracked quickly: the number 129,303 is the decimal representation of Unicode code point U+1F917, which corresponds to the 🤗 emoji — officially named "Hugging Face" in the Unicode standard. The company took its name from that very emoji when it was founded in 2016.businessinsider+2
The second reference proved harder. Some commenters split the digits into 12, 93, and 03, guessing they referred to Nvidia's $12 IPO price in 1999, its 1993 founding year, and its three co-founders: Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. But Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue steered them toward a simpler answer: read as a hex color code, #129303 renders a deep green that closely resembles Nvidia's brand color. "Oh my god," one commenter replied. "It was so simple and my gf was right (again)."officechai+2
According to Business Insider, which first reported in August that Hugging Face was fielding acquisition interest at a valuation of at least $13 billion, the final price landed slightly below that threshold. When reporter Katie Roof wondered on X whether money was left on the table to hit the Easter egg number, Delangue responded that he was "surprised people didn't notice earlier" and added: "Shows that price was never really the most important thing for both sides."businessinsider
The deal, one of Nvidia's largest, will bring Hugging Face's platform — home to more than 3 million AI models and 500,000 datasets — under the chipmaker's umbrella. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the platform would remain open. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approval. Bloomberg reported that the total transaction value, including up to $1 billion in equity-based retention for Hugging Face employees joining Nvidia, comes to roughly $13 billion.bloomberg+2
