stocktitanstocktitanstocktitanNvidia is investing $3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek as the two companies deepen their collaboration across AI infrastructure, personal computing, and automotive platforms, according to a joint statement released Monday.stocktitan
The deal positions Nvidia to extend its dominance in data center AI by embedding its interconnect technologies into MediaTek's custom chip designs, while giving MediaTek a stronger foothold in the fast-growing market for custom AI accelerators.
Under the expanded partnership, MediaTek will adopt Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform, giving hyperscalers and cloud providers a validated path to build custom XPUs that plug into Nvidia's rack-scale AI factory architecture. The NVLink Fusion ecosystem includes Nvidia's NVLink Fusion chiplet, NVLink-C2C high-bandwidth connectivity, and NVHBM memory technology designed to boost bandwidth and energy efficiency.investing+1
Beyond cloud infrastructure, the companies will continue jointly developing multiple generations of Nvidia RTX Spark and DGX Spark PC chips, which combine Nvidia GPUs with MediaTek system-on-chip designs for consumer PCs and AI workstations. In automotive, MediaTek's Dimensity Auto platforms will integrate Nvidia AI and RTX graphics for intelligent vehicle cockpits alongside Nvidia DRIVE AGX.stocktitan+1
"MediaTek is one of the world's great semiconductor companies, with exceptional expertise in system-on-chip design, connectivity, leading performance and power efficiency," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in the statement. MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai said the investment "strengthens a collaboration that spans cloud AI infrastructure, local AI computing and automotive in the era of physical AI".investing+1
The investment comes as Nvidia works to ensure that the growing wave of custom AI chips being developed by cloud giants remains tethered to its NVLink networking ecosystem rather than competing with it. MediaTek is pursuing as much as 15 percent of an estimated $80 billion data center chip segment next year and expects roughly $2 billion in AI chip revenue this year, according to Bloomberg. The Taiwanese firm has also secured AI chip work with Google as it competes with Broadcom and Marvell Technology for custom data center silicon business.bloomberg+1
The partnership follows Amazon's recent commitment to deploy another two million Nvidia components and use Nvidia interconnect technology alongside its own internally designed chips.quiverquant
