Netflix pledges €4M to revive Rome’s Cinema Europa

  • Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced a €4 million, five-year partnership with Italy's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC) to renovate and reopen Rome's historic Cinema Europa theater, which has been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Cinema Europa, which hosted the first public screening of an Italian film 120 years ago, will be transformed into a cultural and educational hub for Europe's oldest film school, with an anticipated reopening in late 2026.
  • The announcement at Italy's Ministry of Culture marks Netflix's 10th anniversary in Italy, during which the streaming giant has produced over 1,000 Italian films and series, filmed in more than 100 cities, and supported over 5,500 jobs in the past five years.

  • Italy's Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli praised the partnership as "a concrete example of virtuous collaboration between the public and private sectors," as Italy's audiovisual industry reached €16.3 billion in revenues in 2024.
