x.24tv+1.24tv+1.Ukrainian officials say a speed cap that SpaceX placed overnight on its military Starshield satellite service, without any warning, has cut off drones in flight and forced units to cancel missions. Elon Musk said on Wednesday, October 14, that the U.S. government, not his company, decides such limits.x+1
"I confirm that last night, SpaceX imposed a speed limit on Starlink terminals while in motion," wrote Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's adviser on defense technology. He said the cap applies to Starshield's "military package" and is set at 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). "Our Defense Forces did not receive prior notice of this restriction, and this led to the disruption of a number of operations". He said the move "cannot be a coincidence" and is "linked to the current political situation".24tv+1
Zelenskiy told Piers Morgan Uncensored the decision was "a big mistake" that "will bring a lot of human losses," Reuters reported. He did not say who was responsible.gvwire
Units say connections have failed well below 160 km/h. A representative of the 7th Rapid Reaction Corps, which fights in the Huliaipole sector, told Reuters the link "could drop for 10–20 seconds at speeds of just 110–120 km/h," which made the drones harder to control. One unmanned systems unit cancelled missions because of it. A Defense Ministry source told Reuters that some guidance systems lost their connection at less than half the stated limit.dw+2
Beskrestnov said the bigger threat is to air defense. Starlink is part of the interceptor drones he called Ukraine's most effective answer to Russia's jet-powered Shaheds, and he said partners are "depriving us of one of the few chances to defend" against them. The Geran-4, a jet-powered drone derived from the Shahed, typically flies at 300–400 km/h, according to Ukraine's defense intelligence agency. The cap does not affect Ukraine's long-range strikes inside Russia, which do not use Starlink.unn+3
On Wednesday afternoon, former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov wrote on X that connectivity "at speeds of up to 160 km/h is being restored." He said that "removing Starshield's speed limit entirely is now critical for Ukraine's defense". Musk replied: "Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS." He added that commercial Starlink "cannot be used for offensive military action".nypost+1
Ukraine gets Starshield through a contract run by the Pentagon. A source told Fox News the arrangement runs until May 15, 2027, and covers mobile platforms. Kyiv says it is talking with SpaceX, the U.S. government and NATO.foxnews+2
The cap comes as relations between Kyiv and Washington get worse. President Donald Trump recently lifted sanctions on Russian diesel, pressed Ukraine to stop striking Russian refineries, and said Ukrainians should replace Zelenskiy. Poland pays for Ukrainian Starlink subscriptions on Kyiv's behalf. Its foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, wrote to Musk on X: "Hey, @elonmusk, big man, are you playing politics with your products again? As your European customers, we are watching you".gvwire
