The statement builds on a series of disclosures stretching back to March, when Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced at the GTC 2026 conference that the company was developing computing platforms specifically engineered for orbital data centers. SpaceX formalized its role in the effort in August, when Nvidia announced that SpaceXAI would deploy Nvidia Vera CPUs and the full Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale system aboard its first-generation Starmind AI1 satellite. The push to place AI infrastructure in orbit has drawn both interest and skepticism. Nvidia's space computing partners also include Axiom Space, Starcloud, and Planet Labs , each pursuing smaller-scale orbital deployments. Gartner analyst Bill Ray wrote in a recent report that "the rush to develop orbital data centers has reached a period of peak insanity," arguing that space-based data centers "will not be able to deliver on the promise of useful analysis of terrestrial data for terrestrial applications for decades, and may not ever be able to do so".networkworld
For SpaceX, the orbital computing effort is tied to broader infrastructure ambitions. The company requested FCC approval earlier this year to launch up to one million satellites for AI centers, a plan that has drawn opposition from scientists over concerns about light pollution and orbital debris.
