phys+1physfinance.yahooIBM International Business Machines Corporation and researchers from the University of Chicago have demonstrated quantum advantage — completing a verified computation in approximately 15 minutes that would require prohibitive runtimes for leading classical simulation methods, the organizations announced on July 30, 2026.
The collaboration encoded 70 logical qubits using a novel error correction method, representing one of the largest demonstrations of logical quantum computing to date. The team executed 2,415 logical two-qubit operations and 468 logical "T gates," achieving logical error rates ten times lower than the underlying physical error rates.phys+1
Unlike previous quantum advantage claims that relied on random circuit sampling — a benchmark that becomes increasingly difficult to verify as problem complexity grows — the new approach retains the same computational hardness while enabling error detection during the process.phys
"Verification remains one of the biggest challenges in firmly establishing experimental quantum advantage," said Bill Fefferman, associate professor of computer science at the University of Chicago. "This experiment develops techniques to better characterize the fidelity of hard quantum states under noise, increasing confidence that the quantum computer is solving a computationally hard problem."phys
"We are now firmly in the quantum advantage era," said Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research and IBM Fellow.quantumzeitgeist+1
The announcement came the same day IBM CEO Arvind Krishna appeared on Mad Money, where he placed specific financial timelines on the technology. Krishna said quantum computing would have "a measurable impact" on IBM's top and bottom line by 2028 or 2029, and projected "a trillion dollars of value" by the end of the 2030s.finance.yahoo
The comments arrived weeks after IBM's stock suffered its worst single-day decline on record on July 14, dropping 25% after the company disclosed customer delays in capital spending. Krishna addressed the near-term concerns, noting that roughly 40% of delayed deals had already closed within three to four weeks of the earnings announcement.finance.yahoo
IBM plans to invest more than $10 billion in quantum computing over the next five years and remains on track to deliver its first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. In May, the company signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce to build what it describes as the world's first pure-play quantum wafer foundry, backed by a $1 billion CHIPS incentive commitment and a matching $1 billion from IBM.finance.yahoo
The paper detailing the quantum advantage demonstration has been published on the arXiv preprint server.phys
