Guggenheim Abu Dhabi sets Dec. 11 opening after two decades of delays

Nearly two decades after it was first announced, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open its doors on December 11, 2026, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi confirmed this week. A $1 Billion Landmark Takes Shape

The museum, first unveiled in 2006, faced years of delays due to structural complexity, labor disputes, the pandemic, and financial strains that pushed the cost past $1 billion. At 80,000 square meters, the building features 30 galleries connected by a central atrium and ten sculptural cones — nine clad in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass — reaching heights of 88 meters. A Collection Built Over 17 Years

Curators have been assembling the museum's collection since 2009, amassing more than 600 works spanning painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and new media from the 1960s to the present. Artists including Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat will be shown alongside contemporary figures from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Regional Ambitions Amid Uncertainty

The opening arrives during a period of geopolitical tension in the Gulf, with cultural organizations elsewhere in the region postponing events.
