Google’s Android alert system warned Venezuela before twin earthquakes hit

Millions of Android smartphone users in Venezuela received early warning notifications seconds before two devastating earthquakes struck the country's northern coastline on Wednesday evening, providing critical moments to seek safety before buildings began to collapse.

The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes hit near San Felipe in Yaracuy state just 40 seconds apart, starting shortly after 6:04 p.m. ET on June 24, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
