db+1dbcryptoDeutsche Bank announced on Wednesday that it will launch a digital asset custody service for institutional and corporate clients in Europe later this year, marking the German lender's first major foray into cryptocurrency infrastructure.db+1
The service will initially support Bitcoin , Ether Ethereum , and selected stablecoins including USDC, EURC, and EURAU, with the bank managing wallets and private keys on behalf of clients. The launch remains pending completion of the applicable regulatory process.db
Under the custody model, Deutsche Bank will handle cryptographic key management and wallet operations, removing the need for institutional clients to build their own infrastructure. The platform will allow clients to hold and transfer supported digital assets to third parties.db
Security measures include hardware-based key protection, multi-person transaction approvals, segregation of duties, and separate warm and cold storage environments. The bank said it will use external technology providers for certain technical components but did not name them in the announcement. Earlier reporting has linked Swiss firm Taurus and Bitpanda Technology Solutions to the bank's digital asset buildout.crypto+2
"Digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it," said Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank's Corporate Bank. "Our aim is to offer clients a secure and regulated gateway to this evolving market."db
The initial target group includes asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers, sovereign institutions, and corporates from Deutsche Bank's Corporate Bank and Investment Bank divisions. The service will initially focus on clients in Germany, Podobnik told Bloomberg.crypto+1
The range of supported assets may expand over time based on client demand and internal approvals, with tokenized financial instruments included on the roadmap. Deutsche Bank has spent several years testing tokenization technology, including participation in the Monetary Authority of Singapore's Project Guardian in 2024.db+2
Deutsche Bank has not set an exact launch date, conditioning timing on the completion of regulatory steps under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. Under MiCA, credit institutions can provide crypto-asset services through a notification process to their national regulator — in Germany's case, BaFin. The bank first applied to BaFin for digital-asset custody permissions in 2023.crypto
The announcement places Deutsche Bank among a growing number of large European lenders entering the institutional crypto custody market. According to the bank's own recent research, the European Securities and Markets Authority's MiCA register now lists nearly 200 crypto-asset service providers authorized to deliver custody and administration services across the bloc.financefeeds
