China's DeepSeek is planning to build a massive artificial intelligence data center in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, a move that would mark one of the largest single computing infrastructure buildouts by the startup that has emerged as a formidable rival to Silicon Valley's top AI labs.
A Gigawatt of Compute
The Hangzhou-based company aims to add one gigawatt of computing capacity at the site, located roughly 350 kilometers northwest of Beijing, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. DeepSeek plans to construct its own facility while also leasing additional capacity from other companies in the area.investing+1
The startup is working to bring at least part of the data center's capacity online by the end of 2027 or early 2028. The type of chips DeepSeek will use for the project remains unclear. Why Ulanqab
Ulanqab has become a hub for data center construction in China, with more than a dozen firms already having projects planned in the city, according to a compilation of local government approvals. Huawei first established a data center presence there in 2013, and companies including Alibaba and Apple have since followed.
