How It Works

The new tool, announced June 11, enables AI agents to operate within a user's existing Coinbase account or in a sandboxed environment with programmable guardrails. Users can set controls including maximum trade sizes and spending limits to manage how much autonomy their agent has. Payments between agents and service providers are handled through x402, Coinbase's open-source machine-to-machine payment protocol that uses stablecoins for instant settlement. Named after the rarely used HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code, x402 was first launched in May 2025 and has since processed hundreds of millions of transactions.
