openrouter+1business-standard+1cnbc+1For the first time, Chinese-developed large language models occupy all five of the most-used positions on OpenRouter, the world's largest neutral LLM routing platform, marking a milestone in China's rapid ascent as the dominant supplier of open-weight AI models globally.
Xiaomi's MiMo-V2.5, a multimodal model released earlier this year at aggressively low prices, holds the top position by token volume, followed by models from DeepSeek, MiniMax, Alibaba's Qwen family, and Moonshot's Kimi, according to OpenRouter's July 2026 rankings. The platform processes more than 20 trillion tokens per week, and Chinese-origin models now account for over 60 percent of all routed traffic.datagravity+3
The dominance builds on a trajectory visible since early 2026. By April, Chinese models held six of the top nine spots. By May, they controlled four of the top five and roughly 61 percent of total token consumption. CNBC reported in July that U.S. companies have shifted usage heavily toward Chinese models on OpenRouter due to cost advantages.cnbc+2
The milestone has sharpened warnings from Wall Street. Jefferies' global head of equity strategy Christopher Wood cautioned on July 27 that cheaper Chinese open-source models could trigger "massive capital destruction" in U.S. AI investments. Wood has argued since early 2026 that China is better positioned to win the AI race due to advantages in energy supply and rapidly closing gaps in compute.linkedin+3
The pricing disparity is stark. DeepSeek's V4-Pro lists at roughly one-twelfth the cost of OpenAI's GPT-5.5 at comparable benchmark performance, while Xiaomi slashed its MiMo API pricing by up to 99 percent in May. Meta's Llama, which defined open-weight AI in 2023-24, has fallen below one percent of routed volume.youtube+1
Industry observers note that routed inference volume does not capture the full market picture. Anthropic and OpenAI still command the majority of industry revenue through premium enterprise pricing, and first-party consumer traffic through ChatGPT and Gemini dwarfs router volumes. But OpenRouter data serves as a leading indicator of developer behavior when cost is unconstrained by brand loyalty — and on that measure, the open Chinese tier has become the global default.datagravity+1
