BBC cancels ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special, showrunner Davies exits

The BBC announced on Wednesday that it has cancelled the planned 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special and confirmed that showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf are departing the long-running science fiction series. The broadcaster will now put Doctor Who out to competitive tender, inviting production companies to bid for the right to produce the show.

A Joint Decision

In a statement released on Wednesday, the BBC said the cancellation was a collective decision between the corporation, Davies, and Bad Wolf. "This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show, which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory," the statement read.variety+2

The BBC said it would retain all intellectual property in Doctor Who, with BBC Studios continuing to lead global distribution, licensing, and consumer products. Details of the tender process will be announced in due course.nordic.ign+1

Davies Bids Farewell

Davies confirmed his departure in a post on Instagram, framing the move as a positive step for the franchise's future. "And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show," he wrote. He explained that the Christmas special had been conceived as a placeholder: "We only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there's no need for it."bleedingcool+1

Davies also sought to clarify recent speculation about casting difficulties. "For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor," he said. The Christmas special had been announced in October 2025, but Davies had acknowledged in subsequent interviews that he had not yet begun writing it due to other commitments.nordic.ign+1

An Uncertain Hiatus

The announcement leaves Doctor Who without a showrunner, lead actor, or confirmed return date. The series last aired new episodes during Ncuti Gatwa's run as the Fifteenth Doctor, which concluded in 2025. Reports in The Sun newspaper in late May had first suggested the Christmas special was in jeopardy due to casting difficulties.doctorwhotv+2

The competitive tender process, required under the BBC's Charter and Agreement, opens the door for any production company to pitch for the franchise — a departure from the show's longstanding relationship with Bad Wolf, the Cardiff-based studio founded by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner. Davies told fans the wait would be worthwhile: "You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you'll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it's worth it!"standard+3
