apple+1macobserver+1currently.att.yahoo+1After 15 years at the helm of the world's most valuable company, Tim Cook will hand the reins to hardware engineering chief John Ternus on September 1, closing one of the most successful executive tenures in corporate history — but leaving his successor to navigate a bruising memory chip crisis.
Apple announced the transition on April 20, with unanimous board approval. Cook, 65, will become executive chairman, while Ternus — a 25-year Apple veteran who has overseen iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPods hardware — joins the board and assumes the CEO title the same day.reuters+2
Cook took over from Steve Jobs in August 2011 when Apple was valued at roughly $350 billion. Under his leadership, the company grew into a nearly $4 trillion enterprise, expanded iPhone distribution globally, launched Apple Watch and AirPods into a $36 billion business, and built a services segment generating $120 billion in annual revenue.finance.yahoo+1
Yet Cook's final earnings call on July 30 cast a shadow over the transition. Reporting record fiscal Q3 revenue of $109.4 billion, Cook nonetheless described memory chip inflation as "a 100-year flood" that forced Apple to raise Mac, iPad, and Vision Pro prices by $150 to $300. Apple's stock fell more than 7% the following session.phemex+2
Cook told The Wall Street Journal News Corp in June that price increases were "unavoidable," noting the company had tried to shield customers but the situation had "become unsustainable". During the earnings call, he added that memory costs would remain elevated through the September quarter, though savings on non-memory components and existing inventory would partially offset the pressure.wsj+1
The timing compounds the difficulty for Ternus. Apple trades at roughly 35 times earnings — a premium valuation that leaves little room for margin compression. By contrast, Nvidia , growing revenue at 85% year over year, trades at a lower forward multiple.currently.att.yahoo
Ternus takes over a company with strong underlying demand — iPhone sales helped drive 17% revenue growth in early 2026 — and a major strategic mandate. Apple has committed to on-device AI processing and signed a long-term custom chip deal with Broadcom through 2031. Analysts view Ternus's engineering background as well-suited to that task.bbc+1
"John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor," Cook said in Apple's announcement. Board chair Arthur Levinson called Ternus "the best possible leader to succeed Tim".oddsshopper+1
With less than a month until the handoff, the market has priced its completion as a near-certainty. The open question is whether Ternus can steer Apple through a supply environment that even his predecessor called unprecedented.oddsshopper
