9to5mac+1developer.apple+1macrumors+1Apple on Friday released Xcode 27.1 beta 1, giving developers their first tools to build and optimize apps for the upcoming foldable iPhone Duo. The release, available through Apple's developer portal, fulfills the company's promise to deliver development support before the end of September.9to5mac+1
The iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable phone, will ship with iOS 27.1, a version purpose-built for the device's dual-display form factor. Xcode 27.1 includes updated SDKs and a simulator supporting the Duo's new poses and orientations. Developers had been waiting for the tools since the device was unveiled on September 9, with existing Xcode 27 builds lacking any Duo simulator.developer.apple+2
While the Xcode release gives developers a head start, the timeline is compressed. Pre-orders for the $1,999 device open October 16, and it ships October 23 in more than 70 countries. Apps built against the iOS 27.0 SDK will run on the Duo but won't take full advantage of its foldable capabilities — for that, developers need to build with the new 27.1 SDK. Apple has been holding group labs and sessions to help developers prepare.kodeco+3
The Xcode release coincided with a new interview in British GQ featuring CEO John Ternus, VP of Industrial Design Molly Anderson, and VP of Human Interface Design Steve Lemay. Anderson said notebooks inspired the Duo's proportions, which are derived from the international A-series paper system so the device retains the same aspect ratio open and closed.macrumors+1
"Everyone knows what a notebook feels like in the pocket and what it feels like to carry around," Anderson told GQ. "So that was a big part of the inspiration."macrumors
Lemay described the software experience as "the greatest hits" of the Mac, iPad, and iPhone, emphasizing that unfolding the Duo should feel like expanding a single device rather than switching between two. "We didn't want it to feel like you're starting a different operating system when you unfold it," he said.theverge+1
The Duo represents the first major product launch under Ternus, who called it "the most transformational change to iPhone since the original". Industry researchers at TrendForce project Apple will capture 25 percent of the foldable market in its debut year, while IDC estimates it could reach 40 percent by the end of 2027. Still, at $1,999, the device enters a market where Samsung and Huawei have competed for years at lower price points — and Apple faces questions about its AI capabilities after a troubled Siri overhaul.finance.yahoo
