macrumors+1macrumors+1macrumors+1Apple designers have pulled back the curtain on the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable smartphone, explaining how the humble notebook shaped the device's form factor and how software from the Mac, iPad, and existing iPhones informed its interface. The revelations come in a new interview with GQ published Friday, featuring CEO John Ternus, Vice President of Industrial Design Molly Anderson, and Vice President of Human Interface Design Steve Lemay.macrumors+1
"Everyone knows what a notebook feels like in the pocket and what it feels like to carry around," Anderson told GQ. "So that was a big part of the inspiration: 'How do you get to something that gives you space but also feels compact?'" The device's proportions are drawn from the international A-series paper system, allowing the Duo to maintain the same aspect ratio whether open or closed.gq-magazine+1
Anderson also described the engineering behind the Duo's hinge, which uses a custom variable torque profile that makes the device easy to open before biasing it toward staying flat. Android Authority's hands-on account confirmed the hinge allows the phone to hold any angle within its range, unlike Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, which only stops at fully open or fully closed positions.androidauthority+1
On the software side, Lemay said the guiding principle was making the unfolding feel like expanding a single device rather than switching between two screens. "We didn't want it to feel like you're starting a different operating system when you unfold it," he told GQ. "And you're never searching for the button you were just looking at." He described the Duo's interface as a "greatest hits" of the Mac, iPad, and iPhone.macrumors+1
Hands-on reports have praised the Duo's near-invisible crease, attributed partly to a nano-textured matte finish on the inner 7.6-inch display that diffuses light and masks the fold. The device weighs 254 grams and features an A20 Pro chip, MagSafe compatibility, and a titanium frame.apple+1
Counterpoint Research estimates Apple could capture a quarter of the foldable market, which it projects will grow 37 percent next year. However, pricing remains a potential barrier — the Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and over $3,100 in India, where steep price increases across the iPhone lineup have drawn scrutiny.finance.yahoo
Looking ahead, Lemay suggested developers will push the Duo in directions Apple has not yet imagined. "There are so many things the developers will come up with that we've never anticipated," he said. "Some of those will become big ideas that take over the industry and change the product in interesting ways." Pre-orders open October 16, with availability beginning October 23.macrumors+1
