venturebeat+1venturebeat+19to5macAnthropic announced Wednesday that it is folding its Claude Cowork product into the standard Claude chat interface, eliminating the need for users to choose between two separate modes. The company is also launching Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta, adding document and presentation creation to any conversation.
Under the previous design, users had to explicitly select Cowork from a toggle below the input box when they wanted Claude to handle longer, multi-step tasks. Regular chat and Cowork shared a home screen but operated as distinct experiences, and work started in one did not carry into the other.venturebeat+1
"We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged," Anthropic said in its announcement. Claude will now determine on its own whether a request calls for a quick answer or a longer agentic workflow, drawing on connectors, tools and context as needed.9to5mac+2
Cowork's underlying capabilities — including task decomposition, use of connected services and the ability to keep working while a user is away — remain intact. Existing Cowork chats, projects, artifacts and connectors are preserved. Claude Code, the company's terminal-based developer tool, remains a separate product.fortune+1
Claude Docs lets users generate and collaboratively edit documents within a conversation. Documents start private but can be shared with named colleagues, who can edit simultaneously and leave comments. Exports to Google Alphabet Inc. Docs and Microsoft Word are supported at launch.theverge+1
Claude Slides follows the same model for presentations. Users can draft, edit and present decks from inside Claude, then download them as PowerPoint or PDF files. This is separate from Anthropic's existing Claude for PowerPoint add-in. Claude Design, previously its own product surface, now also works inside any conversation.techcrunch+2
The Verge noted the additions position Claude more directly against Google's Gemini-powered productivity suite, which expanded its AI features in Docs, Sheets and Slides earlier this year.theverge
The changes are rolling out first to Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks. Team and Free plans will follow, and enterprise administrators will receive at least 30 days' notice before changes reach their organizations.9to5mac+1
Fortune reported the move is part of a broader industry push to build an AI "everything app," noting that OpenAI has pursued a similar strategy since its July launch of ChatGPT Work, which bundled its chatbot with the Codex coding agent. A Stanford Digital Economy Lab study cited by Fortune found that agentic tasks can consume roughly 1,000 times more tokens than simple chat exchanges, raising questions about whether routing more queries through agentic machinery could increase compute costs.fortune+1
By default, Claude will still ask for permission before taking actions, though users can configure it to work more independently and check in only when closer review is needed.venturebeat+1
