Anthropic ends free Fable 5 access, shifts users to tiered pricing

Anthropic is restructuring how subscribers access its most powerful AI model, Claude Fable 5, ending months of extended promotional access and splitting its user base into tiers that push lower-paying customers toward pay-per-use pricing. The changes, which take effect today, come as Chinese open-source models challenge Western AI labs on both performance and cost.

A Tiered System Replaces Open Access

Starting July 20, Claude Fable 5 will be permanently included in Max and Team Premium subscription plans — priced at $100 and $200 per month — but capped at 50 percent of those plans' normal usage limits. Pro and Team Standard subscribers, who pay $20 per month, will lose Fable 5 from their regular plan allotments entirely and must instead use metered usage credits to access the model. "Demand for Fable has been challenging to predict, which is why we rolled it out to subscription plans in stages, extending access several times as we secured additional capacity," the official Claude account posted on X on July 17.x

The move caps a protracted rollout. Since Fable 5 launched on June 9 with API pricing of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, Anthropic has repeatedly extended its promotional inclusion on paid plans — first through June 22, then July 7, July 12, and finally July 19. Chinese Models Add Pricing Pressure

The restructuring arrives against a backdrop of intensifying competition from Chinese labs. Kimi K3, released by Beijing-based Moonshot AI on July 16, became the top-ranked model on several benchmarks, scoring 1,679 on one widely tracked leaderboard compared to Fable 5's 1,631. The shift toward usage-credit billing marks what Indian Express called "a significant shift away from the traditional all-you-can-use AI subscription model and toward token-based pricing".
