  • A fictional AI-generated freelancer operating under the name "Margaux Blanchard" successfully duped at least six major publications including Wired and Business Insider into publishing fabricated articles between April and May.
  • The sophisticated scam unraveled when Jacob Furedi, editor of Dispatch, received a pitch about "Gravemont," a supposedly decommissioned mining town in Colorado that doesn't exist.
  • Wired published a detailed account explaining how they were tricked by an article about couples getting married in video games like Minecraft, which featured fake quotes from non-existent sources like "Jessica Hu," a supposed Chicago-based digital wedding officiant.
  • The deception was discovered when the fake freelancer couldn't provide proper payment information and insisted on PayPal or check payments, though AI-detection tools initially indicated the content was human-written.
  • Publications including Index on Censorship, which had previously warned about AI impersonation threats, acknowledged they became "victims of the very thing we've warned against" and have implemented stricter verification processes.
