The Washington Times+1Gulf News: Latest UAE news, Dubai news, Business, travel news, Dubai Gold rate, prayer time, cinema+1The Express TribunePresident Donald Trump on Thursday warned that the United States would inflict "major military punishment" on Iran and its Houthi allies after the Yemen-based group struck two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, dramatically widening the scope of a conflict that has already seen twelve consecutive nights of American airstrikes against Iranian targets.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he would hold Iran directly responsible for any future Houthi attacks on commercial shipping. "Please let this TRUTH serve to represent that if they do this again, the U.S. will hold Iran responsible, in that the Houthis are a Surrogate and/or Proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis, themselves," Trump wrote. The Washington Times+1
The statement came after Yemen's Houthis claimed they carried out missile and drone strikes on two Saudi oil tankers — named the Encelia and the Layla — as part of a declared "maritime embargo" against Saudi Arabia. The Houthis announced the blockade earlier this week, accusing Riyadh of maintaining a blockade on Yemen.Internazionale+2
The tanker attacks represent a dangerous new dimension in the conflict, threatening to choke off a second critical Middle East shipping corridor alongside the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has repeatedly attempted to close.
U.S. Central Command confirmed late Wednesday that it completed another round of strikes against Iran for the twelfth consecutive night, targeting maritime capabilities, missile and drone storage facilities, coastal surveillance sites, and air defense assets. The sustained bombing campaign follows the collapse in early July of a preliminary peace agreement signed between Washington and Tehran in June.AL-MONITOR: The Middle Eastʼs leading independent news source since 2012+3
Trump has previously threatened to destroy Iranian bridges and power plants if Tehran does not return to negotiations, and the sustained military campaign has drawn criticism from opponents who note that Trump once touted a diplomatic deal as having resolved the conflict.Fox News+3
Oil prices surged on Thursday, with Brent crude climbing above $96 per barrel in early trading before reportedly touching $100 later in the session — the first time since May — as traders assessed the simultaneous disruption of shipping through both the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts have warned of a rare scenario in which both of the Middle East's critical energy chokepoints face sustained threats at the same time, raising the specter of broader supply shortages for global markets. The Mighty 790 KFGO | KFGO+2
The dual-front escalation leaves the region in its most precarious position since the U.S.-Iran war began in late February, with no clear diplomatic off-ramp in sight and energy markets increasingly exposed to further shocks.
