autoguide+1volkswagen-group+1roadandtrackVolkswagen Group announced a sweeping "Future Plan" last week to cut its global model portfolio by up to 50 percent by 2030, and on Monday, German newspaper Bild reported a preliminary list of 10 models that could face elimination — including the Volkswagen Jetta, Porsche Taycan, a future gas-powered Porsche 718 replacement, and the Skoda Fabia.
The restructuring, approved by the executive board on July 9, represents one of the most aggressive downsizing efforts in automotive history, as Europe's largest carmaker seeks to navigate rising tariffs, intensifying competition from Chinese rivals, and the costly transition to electric vehicles.carscoops+1
According to the company's official press release, the model lineup "will be gradually streamlined by up to 50 percent and concentrated on the most attractive market segments," while offering complexity — including available equipment options — will be reduced by up to 75 percent. The group is targeting annual production capacity of approximately 9 million vehicles, down from a pre-pandemic level of 12 million.engadget+1
CEO Oliver Blume and CFO Arno Antlitz framed the restructuring as necessary to push the group's profit margins toward a target band of 8 to 10 percent, according to Carscoops. The plan follows what VW described as three years of "fundamental realignment" across its brands.volkswagen-group+1
While VW's official announcement did not name specific models slated for discontinuation, Bild on Monday published what it described as a preliminary "death list" of vehicles planned for cancellation. According to reporting by Jalopnik and AutoGuide, citing the Bild report, the 10 models include the Volkswagen Jetta, Porsche Taycan, a planned gas-powered 718 successor, the Audi Q5 Sportback, and the Skoda Fabia. Bild estimated VW could save approximately €6.5 billion (about $7.4 billion) through the eliminations by 2031.jalopnik+2
Car and Driver noted that the cuts are unlikely to drastically reshape VW's U.S. lineup but could result in fewer available variants and trim levels for American buyers.caranddriver
The model cuts are part of a wider overhaul that may also include the closure of up to four German production facilities and the elimination of as many as 100,000 jobs, or roughly 15 percent of VW's global workforce, according to Reuters reporting cited by Road & Track. Bloomberg reported the plan emerged after a supervisory board meeting that stopped short of agreeing on deeper workforce reductions.bloomberg+1
VW also announced it would divest a majority stake in its Everllence division for approximately €7.4 billion in cash to strengthen its balance sheet. The company said the comprehensive package of measures is intended to make VW "more resilient, efficient and agile" in what it called "a demanding period of global transformation for the automotive industry."volkswagen-group
