abc+1navalnewsabc+1Ukraine celebrated its 35th Independence Day on Monday with an unprecedented military display — the world's first drone-only parade — replacing traditional columns of soldiers and armored vehicles with unmanned systems across land, sea, and air in a demonstration of how profoundly the war with Russia has reshaped its armed forces.
Thirty unmanned ground vehicles moved in formation along Khreshchatyk, Kyiv's main historical street, including robotic systems designed for combat, reconnaissance, logistics, and the evacuation of wounded soldiers from the battlefield. According to the Ukrainian President's Office, UGVs have completed over 66,000 missions this year alone, and Ukraine has commissioned domestic production of more than 22,000 such vehicles in 2026.abc+1
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media: "Throughout the years of conflict, Ukraine has developed an almost entirely new defense sector. It is modern. It is technological. An industry tailored to confront the challenges of warfare".abc
Nine unmanned surface vessels navigated the Dnipro River, including variants of the Magura and Sea Baby families that Ukraine has used to strike Russian warships and military infrastructure. The Magura V7 displayed the Sea Dragon air defense system, capable of mounting both American AIM-9M Sidewinder and Soviet AA-11 Archer missiles. A new Magura variant, designated MV1, was revealed carrying a battery of interceptor drones for offshore air defense. The Sargan USV appeared with multiple configurations including Sidewinder missiles, quadcopter drone hangars, and a combination of 122mm Grad rockets with electronic warfare equipment.navalnews+1
The parade marked Ukraine's first military display since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, and followed the creation in 2024 of the Unmanned Systems Forces — making Ukraine the first country to establish an independent military branch built around unmanned systems.euronews
Oleksandra Molloy, a specialist in Ukraine's drone technology at the University of New South Wales, said the display demonstrated "an emerging, multi-domain uncrewed force" and sent a message to allied nations that "Ukraine is an invaluable partner in terms of knowledge, experience, and technology gained during the conflict".abc
European leaders joined Zelenskyy in Kyiv for the anniversary, with the UK and France committing to enhanced military support. Zelenskyy said Ukraine could share wartime technologies to help protect its partners.aa+1
